Behind the Scenes: What’s in The Truck?

Nowadays, the expectations of what’s needed to get in a good workout are pretty high. With commercial gyms packed full of expensive equipment, and seemingly millions of opinions on how you should exercise to get the best results, it can all get very overwhelming, especially for a novice. We get it – it’s confusing.

Despite what you might hear in the kitchen at work, or see as you scroll through Instagram, getting fit isn’t as complicated as may seem. You don’t need to be pounding the pavements in all weathers, counting out every last almond and only drinking smoothies to see an improvement. If you’re confused between strength training or cardio, and your workouts are more hit and miss than HIIT or LISS, we’re here to make things a bit easier to understand.

You don’t need a bunch of fancy machines to get in a good workout, and you sure as hell don’t need to be taking a million supplements to get results. We prefer going back to basics with our approach – moving your body more and being more aware of what you’re eating.

At The Fitness Truck, we like to keep things simple, bust the myths, and be transparent with how we work. So, in true TFT style, we’re giving you an all-access, behind the scenes tour of our trusty truck. You can see all the equipment we have in there, what we use it for, and how it can benefit your body. We hope we can convince you that if your goal is to get more active and improve your physical and mental wellbeing, you don’t need to spend loads on a gym membership to get results; a good (challenging) session can be achieved anywhere! So – without further ado – let’s open the trunk and give you a better understanding of just how we work.

Dumbbells (2kg, 3kg and 5kg)

We’ll start off with an easy one. We use dumbbells for a variety of upper body exercises, like bicep curls, shoulder presses, Arnies, frontal and lateral raises and much more. We also utilise these to add some weight to lower body exercises, such as squats, lunges and glute bridges.

Despite what you might think, heavier dumbbells don’t equal stronger muscles. With dumbbells, as with most equipment, the results you get depend how you use it. You don’t need be doing 10kgs and 20kgs bicep curls to see results, but instead it’s all in the technique. Higher reps and slower movements are better for building muscle, and having the right form is crucial.

Dumbbells are great for tonnes of exercises, and we definitely recommend investing in a set if you’re hoping to build some muscle and increase endurance.

GRIPR Sandbag

GRIPR branded excercise sandbags and floor mats on wooden floor

Sandbags are a great multi-purpose piece of kit that can replicate both a slam ball and a kettlebell. We get ours from Escape Fitness, and we think that they’re amazing, both in terms of quality and function. They’re absolutely perfect for our mobile and functional sessions as they stand up to anything!

The GRIPR sandbags are made to withstand all the knocks, drops and slams you can throw at them – they’re made using micro-grade steel sand secured within a fully sealed, double-stitched neoprene bag, so the sand won’t leak (we know, we’ve put them to the test!). This means it’s perfect for dynamic exercises and can fit into the toughest of training routines. They add an extra dimension to the functional training work that we do at TFT.

Penalty Box®

The Penalty Box® is the perfect piece of kit for mobile workouts. Acting as both an agility grid and a hurdle all in one, it’s super lightweight and can be stashed easily in the truck. Based around a clever four-square design which replicates an agility ladder, we can use the Penalty Box® for 120 different excercises! Every person gets their own Penalty Box® and can work at their own pace – instead of a regular agility ladder where you’d normally stand in a line and take turns. This is a brand new piece of kit for us but is already proving to be remarkable way to widen our range of exercises.

Slam Balls (5kg, 10kg and 15kg)

Medicine balls on fitness mats

Our slam balls (or medicine balls) are our version of marmite; our clients either love them or hate them. They can be used for slamming down – hence the name, for throwing and for twisting, meaning they’re great for an all-round fully body workout. They help to inject even more fun into our sessions (the fun is subjective, of course…).

With a range of weights on offer, they’re perfect for all abilities, and fit perfectly into our workouts. From Bulgarian squats to, Russian twists, to burpee slams, they can easily fit into so many different workouts. Using slam balls in our HIIT, AMRAP and EMOM style sessions makes for the perfect level of difficulty and variety, which can be adjusted based on fitness level.

Suspension Trainers

A similar idea to the well-known TRX version, our suspension trainers offer a full-body workout while helping us make use of even the smallest of spaces. We tend to attach these bands to the side of the truck to support novice trainers with their squats or lunges. They’re also amazing for perfecting the correct technique when learning a new skill (pistol squats, anyone?).

We use our suspension trainers for a variety of upper body activities such as prone pulls, wide flies, press ups, tricep extensions, and bicep curls. Lower body exercises can also benefit, including jump squats and lunges. They really add some fun into functional training.

Exercise Mats

Not to be underestimated, these seemingly basic pieces of equipment are actually vital for our sessions. Our foam mats allow our clients to get down without getting dirty. Whether we’re training both indoors and out, they’re used in every one of our sessions. From protecting the knees when working up to a press up, to protecting the glutes when participating in a core finisher, or even protecting hands when doing mountain climbers, they’re extremely versatile and definitely multifunctional.

The thickness of these foam mats ensures that high-impact exercises don’t impact the joints by absorbing the shock, and they can even help with balance and stability. They’re super portable, easy to store and even easier to clean.

Abs Rollers

Also known as the wheel of death (wait until you’ve had a go), abs rollers make for a great addition to any core workout. They’re the ultimate exercise to work out your abs, improving core strength.

A stronger core provides better balance and stability, and the benefits impact other areas of everyday life. From a reduced risk of injury to an increased power output from both the core musculature and peripheral muscles, working on your core is vital for better overall wellbeing. But we know… getting there hurts!

Resistance Bands

We carry a range of light, medium and heavy resistance bands to all of our sessions. These attach to the side of the truck, allowing our clients to perform a massive range of both row and pull exercises.

Resistance bands are extremely versatile. Whether it’s tying them around the truck’s roof bars, or standing on them and pulling, they allow us to execute high pulls, face pulls, bicep curls, and much more – all at a resistance and intensity to suit even the most novice of clients.

Music

No session wouldn’t be complete without a great playlist to get you through. Music is proven to distract from fatigue, elevate mood, and may even promote metabolic efficiency. It’s safe to say that utilising motivational music with our clients makes for entertaining sessions, better results and a happier atmosphere (and yes, we take requests).

We use the SD12B 150W rechargeable speaker from Sound Dynamics to bang out the tunes, which works perfectly to fill whatever space we’re using.

So there you have it!

From our mats to the music, we keep our sessions simple, so we can focus on the things that are important. We don’t mess around with silly exercises or exaggerated movements – we stick to the basics, because that’s what works. All of the equipment we utilise aids in our ability to be convenient, which is at the core of what we do.

According to the New York Post, only 29% of people consider their exercise routine to be convenient, meaning that for the majority of people, getting in some movement is difficult. With family, hobbies, work and chores getting in the way, fitness can fall to the bottom of any to do list.

We know that it’s far more easy to do something when it’s convenient. That’s why, here at The Fitness Truck, we’ve paired this factor with our passion for fitness, eliminating the inconvenience factor to our clients’ exercise routines. We bring the equipment, the workout, and the fun to you – wherever that may be.

We offer personal, exclusive and corporate sessions. So, whether you want to work out 1-to-1, with your family, a small group of mates or with a group of work pals, we cover all bases. Our packages mean that we come to you, wherever you are, and at a time that suits you.
